Franz Josef Land from east
Franz Josef Land is a group of islands in the far north of Russia. The naming of the group as well as of many of the individual islands took place during an Austrian expedition in 1873. The large island in the foreground left of this view is Graham Bell Island and behind is Wilczek Land. The largest island of the group, Prince George Land can be seen in the background right. Although none of the Islands features particularly high mountains - the highest point is just about 600m - they are largely covered by glaciers due to the northernly location.
