Nighttime Antarctica

Well – not really night but as i have mentioned before earth observation satellites in sun synchronous orbit have half of their orbit on the night side of the earth. Therefore in polar regions during summer images can be collected both during ascending and decending parts of the orbit at different lighting situations. Here is a mosaic assembled from images of Landsat 8 from the ascending part of the orbit from Antarctica. The area is McMurdo Sound which i covered with regular images earlier. With a sun elevation of less than 10 degrees you get very long shadows and strong emphasis on the relief.
