The birth of a new island

One difficulty of creating the Franz Josef Land map (see the previous post for the details) has been the constant change of the glaciers and ice caps that cover most of the islands. Like elsewhere in the Arctic glaciers are mostly retreating although there are also local advances in some areas. Among other things this leads to the formation of new islands as can be observed at the southeast coast of Hall Island:

As you can see the ice bridge connecting the peninsula to the main island is thinning and will probably break up completely next year or the year after.

This birth of new islands is not without precedent – there is for example also a small islet at the north coast of Eva-Liv-Island further north that has formerly been connected to the main island as can be seen on old Soviet maps.
