In April I wrote in detail about the quality of the Openstreetmap coastline data. I have now produced an update to that with new analysis maps that also include the new Antarctica data and a list of other larger coastline changes that have been made in the meantime.
When looking at coastline changes the question arises what larger changes there might be in the future. Of course there will likely be further improvements of areas currently mapped with low detail as pointed out in my analysis. But the more interesting question is what are the largest features fully missing, most obvious in case of islands. This is something the analysis of existing data alone will not tell. And I do not know this for sure either of course but i can venture a guess. So here the – certainly incomplete – list of larger islands currently missing as coastlines is Openstreetmap:
- Northeast Caspian Sea islands (>10km but somewhat unclear due to sea level changes)
- Kirov Islands, Kara Sea in northern Russia (~10km)
- Miller Island near Ellesmere Island in northern Canada (~6km)
- Seluan Island in Indonesia (~5km)
- Madu Island in Indonesia (~4km)
- Karampuang Island in Indonesia (~3km)
- Perley Island near Meighen Island in northern Canada (~3km)
- Two islands northwest of Wales Island in northern Canada (~3km)
