The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula in eastern Russia has shown frequent activity throughout 2013 with many smaller eruptions. This Landsat image shows the mountain close to mid winter (December 7). Since it is located at about 56°N the sun is very low at the time of the satellite taking the image leading to the mountains as well as the ash plume of the volcano casting long shadows – similar to the Antarctica image shown recently. As you can see on the image there is not much snow – the area is one of the driest parts of Kamchatka. At the upper edge of the image you can see the Shiveluch which has also shown activity in 2013.
