A poster for the State of the Map 2026 conference demonstrating map design innovations in an OpenStreetMap based map style.
by Christoph Hormann, Imagico.de.
Below a number of examples from the maps on the poster with explanation of the map design innovations.
Map design under CC-BY-SA 4.0. Map data by OpenStreetMap contributors - licensed under ODbL.

Differentiated rendering of linear barrier=* - here showing barrier= and barrier=.

Symbol augmentation for bus stops with shelter - either mapped with shelter= on the bus stop or with a separate shelter node closeby. The augmentation is optional, meaning it is displayed only if there is space and it is dynamic, meaning if there is no space on the top left a top right position is used instead.

Displacement of house numbers when mapped together with POIs. Housenumbers also get de-duplicated when mapped both on building and on POI node.

Flat line ends at tunnel portal for precise match to surrounding geometries. Note the barrier= on top of the tunnel portal. Also visible is a barrier= along the tunnel ramp.

Ground unit rendering of roads based on tagged/estimated width, lanes=* visualization on roads, bus/cycle/parking lane display.

Symbol augmentation for secondary tags on parking: fee=yes (with currency symbol matching location), supervised=, access=, capacity=1

Floating pier indicated through additional dark blue outline

Differentiated, non-blocking rendering of trees based on leaf_type/leaf_cycle and diameter_crown/circumference/height

Visualization of access restrictions with exceptions on roads and access restricted barriers

Rendering of natural= differentiated by leaf_type/leaf_cycle. Left is deciduous and broadleaved, right is untagged.

Symbol augmentation for secondary tags on charging stations:
capacity=*, socket:*

Differentiated rendering of benches based on backrest=*, material=*

Disabled parking spaces, visualization of surface on parkings

Display of sport=* on leisure= using single symbol pattern (the non-blocking symbol gets clipped to the extent of the pitch)

Display of line features on pedestrian areas (like road tunnels, barriers) while maintaining correct layering of roads

Symbol augmentation for drinking_water= on water related features. Reserving bright blue color for water related features for better map readability

Context adjusted display of pedestrian crossings, including differentiation of marked/crossing:island=, implicitly mapped street side parking.
